Come visit the Grasslands!

Located off of Hoagerburgh Road between Bates and Long Lane in Wallkill, Ulster County New York. Look for the big brown Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge sign at the entrance. There is an estimated 3.6 miles of trails perfect for hiking, birding and photography.  Portions of this trail network are closed to the public during the cold-weather months to help protect the overwintering Short-eared Owls and other wildlife during the Refuge's peak human visitation period.


This is a sensitive bird habitat for endangered and migrating species.

- Please abide by the 5mph speed limit when entering

- The Refuge is open from dawn to dusk

- Amenities: Bathroom facility, observation platform, gazebo, observation blinds, track wheelchair.  Observation platform and bathroom are wheelchair accessible, as is the observation blind closest to the main parking area on our blue trail.   Track wheelchair is available for visitor use by advanced reservation (please contact Scott Lenhart at USFWS  at  Scott_Lenhart@fws.gov to learn more).

- No dogs allowed

- The use of drones is prohibited

- No bicycles, horses or ATV's

- Please stay on the trails at all times and do not harass the wildlife ( security cameras, community watch and police patrolling enforced )
